Conservation Alliance Nepal: Safeguarding Nature and National Security
Nepal’s rich biodiversity and natural resources are not only vital to the country’s environment but are also integral to its national security. With increasing global threats such as climate change, deforestation, and illegal wildlife trafficking, safeguarding our ecosystems has become a matter of both environmental and national importance. Conservation Alliance Nepal (CAN) was formed to address these dual challenges, recognizing that conservation efforts are closely tied to the stability, security, and well-being of the nation.
Conservation and National Security: An Inseparable Connection
In Nepal, conservation is about more than just protecting wildlife and forests—it’s about securing the future of the nation. Environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity can lead to resource conflicts, economic instability, and displacement, all of which pose direct threats to national security. Moreover, Nepal’s geographical significance, bordering two global giants, makes the protection of our natural resources essential for geopolitical stability.
At CAN, we understand that effective conservation requires a comprehensive approach that includes national security considerations. Our unique approach integrates not only environmental preservation but also disaster resilience, resource management, and the prevention of conflicts that can arise from environmental degradation.
A Professional Team with Expertise in National Security
One of the key strengths of Conservation Alliance Nepal is our highly professional and experienced team, which includes government officials, army generals, high level police officers, and conservationists. With this broad expertise, we bring together perspectives from national security, law enforcement, and environmental science to develop effective strategies for safeguarding Nepal’s natural resources.
Our team is led by General Gaurav Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, former Chief of the Army Staff, Nepali Army, who serves as Chairperson. His leadership ensures that our efforts are aligned with national security priorities, especially when addressing issues like illegal poaching, resource exploitation, and border area conservation. Alongside General Rana, our team includes retired army and police officers who understand the security implications of environmental threats and have first-hand experience in mitigating these risks.
This combination of conservation and security expertise positions CAN uniquely to offer strategic policy recommendations and on-the-ground solutions that not only protect the environment but also enhance national security.
Our Role in Conservation and National Strategy
Conservation Alliance Nepal works closely with the Government of Nepal, the Nepali Army, and other relevant agencies to strengthen national efforts in conserving biodiversity while ensuring the security of the country’s natural resources. By advising on policy, governance, and security measures, we aim to protect critical ecosystems, prevent illegal activities, and ensure that conservation policies are effectively implemented.
We also recognize the growing threats from climate-related disasters such as floods and landslides, which can destabilize communities and create security vulnerabilities. CAN is committed to integrating disaster resilience into our conservation strategies, ensuring that Nepal is not only preserving its natural wealth but also building a more secure and resilient future.
A Call to Action
As we continue to grow, Conservation Alliance Nepal invites professionals, organizations, and policymakers to collaborate with us in strengthening the link between conservation and national security. The health of our ecosystems is directly tied to the stability and security of Nepal. Together, we can ensure that our nation’s rich biodiversity is preserved while reinforcing the safety and prosperity of its people.
Let’s join hands in creating a secure, sustainable, and resilient Nepal through dedicated conservation efforts that protect both our environment and national interests.
